Allen Chaney Books Ticket to Florida

Allen Chaney has chosen Florida and this could be a sign of change for Uconn. Letting superb talent such as Chaney leave your own backyard is not a good sign but there was little Calhoun could do. With no roster spots open, Uconn is window shopping talent and it could haunt them in a couple of years. Sophomores and Juniors dominate this roster and the only way to stop a rebuilding year every three years is to have some kids leave early and others stay the full four that way there isn’t three starters leaving every other year. It is possible that with a successful Uconn season that Thabeet or Dyson could leave and that would open up a couple of roster spots but if they have to watch from the sidelines for another recruiting season then Uconn has a big problem on their hands.

David, Chaney could have been signed sealed and delivered if Uconn played it's cards right. All they had to do is show some interest early on.

If you follow recruitng the way I do, you would that Uconn had Chaney's highest level of interest in his Junior year. However, Uconn was too interested in Ed Davis fron Virginia to give Allen a look. Allen got offers early on from Providence, URI, Umass, Fordham, St. Johns, Seton Hall and St. Joes. Chaney stepped up his game in the spring with some amazing performances on the AAU circut and by mid summer he went from a 1 star to a 4 star recruit in less than a year.

By this time Chaney was getting interest from Florida, BC, Indiana, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Ohio State. Uconn waited 'til Ed Davis committed to UNC to finally contact Chaney. Chaney's coach, Craig Parker told the media he wasn't sure why Uconn waited so long to contact Chaney but Calhoun invited Allen to his skills camp in mid August. It was there that Uconn found out that Chaney was no longer interested in Uconn. What was reported to the media was that Uconn decided not to offer but that was it. Chaney eveentually signed with Florida.

Uconn now is one of the 5 in the running for #1 Greg Monroe. Apparently, Uconn trails the pack and will be visited last of the 5. Meanwhile, another local talent Kevin Jones (Mt. Vernon, NY) is being over looked.

Both Davis and Monroe will be one and dones. Jones and Chaney should be 3-4 year players. Why is Uconn gambling with top 5 players when they have had trouble recruiting at that level for the 2 years and it appears the program is on the decline? What also hurts them is the amount of bad press Calhoun has generated for Uconn in the same time period.
